Imam Hasan (A.S.), the Magnanimous

Congratulations on the Auspicious Birth Anniversary of
Imam Al-Hasan Ibn Ali al-Mujtaba
(P b u h)

Name: Al-Hasan

Title: Al-Mujtaba
Agnomen: Abu Muhammad
Father’s Name: Amir al-Mu’minin (Pbuh)
Mother’s Name: Fatimah (Holy Daughter of the Holy Prophet (S.A.))
Birth: In Medina on Tuesday, 15th Ramadan 3 A.H.
Martyrdom: Poisoned and martyred at the age of 46, in Medina on Thursday, 28th Safar 50 A.H.;

Holy body was buried in Jannatu ‘I-Baqi, in Medina.

Imam Hasan (Pbuh) was the eldest son of Imam Ali (Pbuh) and Hadrat Fatimah (S.A). When the Holy Prophet received the happy news of the birth of his grandson, he came to the house of his beloved daughter, took the newly born child in his arms, recited Adhan and Iqamah in his right and left ears respectively, and in compliance with Allah’s command named him al-Hasan.

Imam Hasan (A.S.), the Magnanimous

I shall first narrate a tradition about Imam Hasan (a.s.). I hope this tradition becomes a beacon of guidance for all of us.

Once a person came to the presence of Imam Hasan (a.s.) and made a fervent appeal for help. The Imam (a.s.) came out of his house with the person. When he found Imam Husayn (a.s.) on the way, he asked the person, “Why didn’t you approach this brother of mine for help?” The man said, “O son of the Prophet! I had noticed that Imam Husayn (a.s.) was in the mosque doing his I’tekaaf (retirement to the mosque for continued prayer). At that moment Imam Hasan (a.s.) said the following words that should be a source of guidance for us: “If you had approached Imam Husayn (a.s.) during his I’tekaaf for his help, and he had fulfilled your need, then the reward for him would have been more than continuous prayer (I’tekaaf) for one month!” (Bihar, Vol 74, Page 335)

If someone provides relief to a Muslim, his reward will be more than that for spending a month in the mosque praying day and night! I, therefore, appeal to all the believing men and womenthat, to the extent possible, they should provide help and assistance to Muslims. A wife who helps her husband and a husband who takes care of the needs of his wife too shall earn this reward. This will be the theme of our talk today.

Allamah Tabatabai writes about Imam Hassan(as

Imam Hassan Mujtaba, upon who is peace, was the second Imam. He and his brother Imam Hussein were the two sons of Amir al-Mu’minin ‘Ali and Hadrat Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet. Many times the Prophet had said, “Hasan and Hussein are my children.” Because of these same words ‘Ali would say to his other children, “You are my children and Hassan and Hussein are the children of the Prophet.” Imam Hassan was born in the year 3 AH, in Medina and shared in the life of the Prophet for somewhat over seven years, growing up during that time under his loving care. After the death of the Prophet which was no more than three, or according to some, six months earlier than the death of Hadhrat Fatima, Hassan was placed directly under the care of his noble father. After the death of his father, through Divine Command and according to the will of his father, Imam Hassan became Imam; he also occupied the outward function of caliph for about six months, during which time he administered the affairs of the Muslims.

During that time Mu’awiyah, who was a bitter enemy of ‘Ali and his family and had fought for years with the ambition of capturing the caliphate, first on the pretext of avenging the death of the third caliph and finally with an open claim to the caliphate, marched his army to Iraq, the seat of Imam Hassan ’s caliphate. War ensued during which Mu’awiyah gradually subverted the generals and commanders of Imam Hassan’s army with large sums of money and deceiving promises until the army rebelled against Imam Hassan. Finally, the Imam was forced to make peace and to yield the caliphate to Mu’awiyah, provided it would again return to Imam Hassan after Mu’awiyah‘s death and the Imam’s Household and partisans would be protected in every way. In this way Mu’awiyah captured the Islamic caliphate and entered Iraq. In a public speech he officially made null and void all the peace conditions and in every way possible placed the severest pressure upon the members of the Household of the Prophet and the Shi’a.

During all the ten years of his Imamate, Imam Hassan lived in conditions of extreme hardship and under persecution, with no security even in his own house.

In the year 50 AH, he was poisoned and martyred by one of his own House- hold who, as has been accounted by historians, had been motivated by Mu’awiyah. In human perfection Imam Hassan was reminiscent of his father and a perfect example of his noble grand- father. In fact, as long as the Prophet was alive, he and his brother were always in the company of the Prophet who even sometimes would carry them on his shoulders. Both Sunni and Shl’ite sources have transmitted this saying of the Holy Prophet concerning Hassan and Hussein: “These two children of mine are Imams (leaders) whether they stand up or sit down” (allusion to whether they occupy the external function of caliphate or not). Also, there are many traditions of the Holy Prophet and ‘Al concerning the fact that Imam Hassan would gain the function of Imamate after his noble father. (Shiite Islam).

Imam al-Hassan ibn ‘Ali’, peace be upon him, said:

If you fail to obtain something of worldly benefit, take it as if the thought of it had never crossed your mind at all.

Never did a nation resort to mutual counsel except that they were guided by it towards maturity.

It is love which brings closer those who are remote by ancestry, and it is (the absence of) love which causes dissociation between those who are related by ancestry

Awareness and Courtesy of Imam Hassan (a.s.)

One day, an old man was performing ablution. His ablution was futile and invalid. Imam Hassan (a.s.) ought to make him aware of his fault but how? If he said to him you are wrong possibly his heart might break and he got annoyed and did not accept it. He along with Imam Hussain (a.s.) decided to create a scene and ask the old man to make the judgment. Imam Hassan (a.s.) addressed Imam Hussain (a.s.) and said, “I perform a better ablution as compared to yours.” Imam Hussain (a.s.) said “I perform it better than you do.” Both of them approached the old man and said, “You come and see our ablution and decide who performs a better ablution.” Both of them got busy with performing ablution and ended it in a correct and nice way. The old man understood what was the secret of their act and became aware that they meant him to find out his fault, in this way. So he said to them “The ablution performed by both of you is correct, I am an old man, who did not know how to perform the ablution correctly. You made me aware about my fault. I am much thankful to you.”

Piety and Purity of Imam Hassan (a.s.)

Imam Hassan (a.s.) was the most pious, devout and ascetic worshiper and adorer of God. Whenever he went to Mecca for pilgrimage, he would go walking on foot. Whenever he performed ablution or stood for his prayers he saw himself in the court of God and his body started trembling he said, “The time has come for me to submit the deposit of God to Him.”

When he came to mosque, he would raise his head, in the prayer place, towards the sky and say, “Oh God this is your guest standing in your court. Your defaulter servant has come towards you. And he hopes that you will forgive his bad deeds, by virtue of your kindness and forgiveness.”

The Fortitude and Forbearance of Imam Hassan (a.s.)

One day he was crossing a street riding a horse. On the way he came across a man who was one of the friends of “Muawiyah”. When that man knew he was Imam Hassan (a.s.) he started using an un-respectful language. Imam Hassan (a.s.) stopped and listened to him and then facing him said, “I think you are a traveler and stranger and not a local person. You have been provoked by the enemies about us and their false words about us have made you cynical and pessimistic about us. If you have a need I may fulfill that need. If you are hungry, I will order to feed you. If you require a dress and clothes, I will order to dress you up. If you don’t have residence to live in I will take you along with me to my house and extend hospitality and give you treatment. When that disrespectful person heard those words from the Imam (a.s.), he got very much ashamed and repented. He was so upset and uneasy about what he had done that he started weeping and apologized and said, “The words of your enemies had affected me. Before this (event) you and your father were the greatest enemies of mine among all the people. But now that I have witnessed this courtesy of yours, you are the most respectful and gracious to me among all the people.

I became aware that you are a family who has the capability of becoming the heirs of the Prophet Muhammad (saw). Till the time I am living I will be a friend and devotee of you and would defend your right. So he did what he had said.

The Charity and mercifulness of Imam Hassan (a.s.)

1. A person came to Imam Hassan (a.s.) and said “poverty and bad luck is torturing me. You are a family of chastity, purity and infallibility. Get me saved from this cruel enemy?” Hazrat Imam Hassan (a.s.) called his servant and said, “How much money do you have available?” He replied “five thousand Dinnars” He said, “Give all of this money to this man so that it may become the capital of his business and life and he may relieve himself off and get rid of poverty and resource less ness.

2. One day, Imam Hassan (a.s.) went to the house of God. In the very condition when he was busy praying he heard a man addressing his God and saying, “Oh God, I need ten thousand Dirhams to get it shaped as the capital of my life and you the merciful one give me this boon and blessing”. The moment Imam Hassan (a.s.) returned back, he sent the said amount for him.

3. A poor and distressed man came to Imam Hassan (a.s.) and recited a rhyme meaning thereby, “I am left over with nothing, not even a single dirham. You can perceive my condition fully well and know it. I have nothing left with me to sell except my honor. I know you are the purchaser and buyer of it.” The Imam Hassan (a.s.) at once called his servant and said, “Whatever money you have got with you, give it to this man.”

The servant gave ten thousand Dirhams to him. Hazrat Imam Hassan (a.s.) asked the servant to make excuse as well, because, he did not possess more than that amount to be given out to him. He advised him to take that money and use it for his life and running the wheels of it and possibly getting rid of poverty and distress.

These few stories exhibit this fact that in the same way Imam Hassan (a.s.) was thoughtful and consider ant about the dooms day of the people, he was careful and considering about their Worldly affairs, for, the World is connected and patched up with the justice day. And the hunger and poverty stricken man cannot think about his dooms day. We must fully know that the Imam’s helps and aids to the people as were not of the sort to encourage people about begging. Instead, these were extended in a manner to extend job and activity chances for them.

IMAM HASAN BIN ALI (A.S.) & THE HOLY QURAN

HIS RECITATION OF THE HOLY QURAN

Shaykh Sadooq (a.r.) has reported that:

[Whenever Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba (as) recited the Holy Quran and came across the verse, which begins with “O you who have faith!” Imam (as) would pause and say, “O Lord! Here I am responding to your call”.]

                                                                (Aamaali of Shaykh Sadooq)

It is also reported that Imam Hasan (as) had the habit of reciting Surah al-Kahf (Chapter 18) from the Holy Quran every night before sleeping.

                                                                     (Tareekh Ibn Katheer)

Why is there a particular mention of this Surah? Ayatullah Shaykh Ali Karimi states that: This Surah talks about hope of waking up after sleep just as was the case of ‘As-haabe Kahf’ (the people of the cave), which has been described therein. Perhaps it also directs us to the fact that whether one sleeps for a short or long time, to wake him up is in the power of Allah (SWT) alone. Therefore, one should never be negligent about the Manager of all affairs (Allah) especially because if He (SWT) wills, He (SWT) can make one sleep for very long and if He (SWT) wills, He (SWT) can take away one’s soul during sleep such that there is no return into this world after that. (Quran-o-‘Itrat)

GUIDANCE ON ISTIGHFAR FROM QURAN

Ibn Rabee’ bin Sabeeh has reported that:

[A person came to Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba (as) and began to complain about the absence of rain. Imam (as) told him, “Seek forgiveness from Allah”. Then a man came and said, “Pray to Allah that he should grant me a son”. Imam (as) told him, “Seek forgiveness from Allah”. Then, yet another man came and complained to Imam (as) about poverty. Imam (as) told him, “Seek forgiveness from Allah”.

The narrator asked, “People have come to you with different kinds of problems and you have offered one solution to all and that is to seek forgiveness?”

Imam (as), “I have said nothing from myself rather I have based my answer on the verse (of Quran) in which Allah (SWT) says: “I told them: Plead to your Lord for forgiveness, indeed He is all-forgiver. He will send for you abundant rains from the sky, and aid you with wealth and sons, and provide you with gardens and provide you with streams”. (71:10-12)”.] (Quran-o-‘Itrat)

It is also narrated that:

[When Imam Hasan (as) was going towards Mu’awiya, one of his followers joined him briefly in his walk and said, “I am a wealthy man but I have not been blessed with children. Could you please teach me something so that Allah (SWT) grants me with a child?” Imam (as) said to him, “Do Istighfar (seeking forgiveness from Allah)”.

The man returned and followed the advice of Imam (as) so much as that many a time he would seek forgiveness seven hundred times a day. Eventually, he was blessed with ten sons.

When Mu’awiya was informed about this incident, he said, “Have you not asked him the reason for it?” He then sent a man to Imam (as) to inquire about it. Imam (as) said,

“Haven’t you heard the statement of Hud: “O my people! Plead with your Lord for forgiveness, then turn to Him penitently: He will send copious rains for you from the sky, and add power to your (present) power. So do not turn your backs (on Him) as guilty ones”. (11:52)

And the statement of Nuh: “I told them: Plead to your Lord for forgiveness, indeed He is all-forgiver. He will send for you abundant rains from the sky, and aid you with wealth and sons, and provide you with gardens and provide you with streams”. (71:10-12)”.]

                                                                        (Fusoolul-Muhimmah)

HIS ACTIONS ON QURANIC TEACHINGS

Anas bin Malik has reported that:

[One day we were with Hasan bin Ali (as) when his female slave came by and greeted him saying: “Salaamun Alaykum (Peace be on you)”. Thereafter she also presented a vase of flowers to him. After responding to her greeting, Imam (as) said, “Go! I have freed you for the sake of Allah (SWT)”.

I asked, “(O Maula!) She greeted you and presented you with a vase of flowers, which is valueless and in return, why did you set her free?”

Imam (as) responded, “Allah (SWT) has taught me that when someone greets you, then in reply, greet the person in a better manner. ‘When you are greeted with a salute, greet with a better one than it, or return it; indeed Allah takes account of all deeds’ (4:86) My best form of returning her greeting was to set her free”.] (Manaqib Aali Abi Talib)

Once someone accused Imam Hasan (as) of enjoying haughtiness. Imam (as) said, “No! I enjoy honour. Allah says: ‘Honour belongs to Allah, His messenger and to the believers’. (63:8).” (Tuhaf al-‘Uqool)

HIS KNOWLEDGE OF QURAN

A Man came to Ibn Abbas and Ibn ‘Umar, and asked the interpretations of SHAAHID (Witness) and MASH-HOOD (One who is witnessed) in the Holy Quran.

Ibn Abbas said, “SHAAHID was the day of Friday whereas MASH-HOOD referred to the day of ‘Arafah”. Ibn ‘Umar said, “SHAAHID was the day of Friday but MASH-HOOD refers to the day of sacrifice in Hajj”.

The man then went to Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba (as) and asked him the same question. Imam (as) said, “SHAAHID is the Holy Prophet (saww) and MASH-HOOD refers to the day of Judgement”. When the man asked the Imam (as) to prove the same from the Holy Quran, Imam (as) recited the following two verses from the Holy Quran:

“O Prophet! Surely We have sent you as a SHAAHID (witness) and as a bearer of good news and as a warner”. (33:45)

“This is the day on which people shall be gathered together and this is the day of MASH-HOOD (that shall be witnessed)”. (11:103)

When the man heard this, he said, “The reply of al-Hasan is better”.

                                                                                (Fusoolul-Muhimmah)

HIS STRONG ATTACHMENT WITH QURAN

The attachment of Imam Husayn (as) with the Holy Quran was very strong. Infact, this is evident from his Ziyaaraat (salutations) that we recite on different occasions.

For instance, in the Ziyaarah of Laylatul-Qadr, we recite:

“I bear witness that you established prayers, and gave Zakat, enjoined the good and forbade evil. You recited the Book (Quran) the way it should be recited…”

Similarly in the Ziyaarah of Imam Husayn (as), which is recited on the day of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Ad-haa, we say: “I bear witness that you were the recitor of Quran…Peace be on you O companion of Quran”.

In his Ziyaarah of Imam Husayn (as), our 12th Imam, Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi (AJ) has stated: “You were for the Prophet – a son and for the Quran – a support”. (Bihar al-Anwaar)

GIVING IMPORTANCE TO LEARNING QURAN

Abdul-Rahman Salmi taught one of the sons of Imam Husayn (as) to recite Suratul-Fatiha from the Holy Quran. When the child read the Surah in presence of his father, Imam (as) gave 1000 dinars to the tutor and added many other lavish gifts.

Somebody asked the Imam (as) as to why he (as) had given away so much and the Imam (as) replied, “Whatever I have given cannot be matched with what he (the tutor) has given to my son”. In another narration, it is mentioned that the Imam (as) said, “These gifts are valueless if it were matched with the learning of Quran”. (Tafseer al-Burhaan)

What the Imam (as) implied was that his gifts which he (as) gave to the tutor of his son were nothing in comparison with the gift the tutor had given to the child of teaching him the Holy Quran.

RESPONDING WITH QURANIC VERSES

Imam Husayn (as) used to respond to people with quotations from the Holy Quran.

‘Assam Ibn Mustalaq reports that:

[Once, as I was entering into Madina, my eyes fell upon Husayn bin Ali (as). Seeing him filled my heart with awe and respect for him. However, the hatred of his father, which was hidden in my heart, erupted.

I went to him and asked, “Are you the son of Abu Turab (Ali)?”

“Yes” he (as) replied.

Thereupon, I started abusing him and his father in the most degrading manner. Meanwhile Imam Husayn (as) patiently listened to me and there was no sign of anger or annoyance apparent in him. Eventually, he (as) recited the following verse from the Holy Quran:

“I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan. Adopt (the policy of) excusing (the faults of) people, bid what is right, and turn away from the ignorant. Should a temptation from Satan disturb you, invoke the protection of Allah; indeed He is All-hearing, All-knowing. When those who are Godwary are touched by an insinuation of Satan, they remember (Allah) and, behold, they perceive. But their brethren, they draw them into error, and then they do not spare (any harm)”.

                                                                                          (7:199-202)

Then the Imam (as) said, “You have been misled and I pray for your forgiveness. If you desire any help then we shall help you; If you desire any support then we shall support you; and if you need any guidance then we shall guide you”.

When I heard these words, I felt ashamed and remorseful about my action. Seeing this, the Imam (as) recited, “He said: There shall be no reproach on you today. Allah will forgive you and He is the most Merciful of the merciful”. (12:92)

Then he (as) asked, “Are you from the people of Shaam (Damascus)?”

I replied, “Yes”. Imam (as) said, “I do not give importance to what you have said to me. May Allah (SWT) protect you and us. Now tell me what can we do for you? Godwilling, whatever we give, you will find it more than you hoped for and your misunderstanding about us shall disappear”.

I did not find any place to hide myself due to the embarrassment and wished the earth would tear apart and swallow me in it. Today, there is no one on the face of this earth whom I hold dearer than Imam Husayn (as) and his beloved father.] (Safeenah al-Bihar)

(Pbuh) حسن بن علي بن أﺑﻲ طالب)‎ (c. 625 – 669),

we extend our greetings and felicitations to our 12th living Imam (ATF)

On a Friday night I saw my mother (Fatima) standing in her arch of prayer. She was continuously kneeling and performing prostration till the dawn broke. I would hear her pray for the faithful men and women, but she did not pray at all for herself. I said, “Oh mother, why did you not pray for yourself like you prayed for others? so she replied, “Oh my son, first thy neighbour and thereafter your own house.”
–Narrated by Imam Hassan (AS

The Auspicious Birth Anniversary of Imam Hassan (Pbuh) حسن بن علي بن أﺑﻲ طالب)‎ (c. 625 – 669)

Imam Hasan was the eldest son of Imam ‘Ali and Hadrat Fatimah. When the Holy Prophet received the happy news of the birth of his grandson on the 15th of Ramadhan, 3 AH , he came to the house of his beloved daughter, took the newly born child in his arms, recited adhan and iqamah in his right and left ears respectively, and in compliance with Allah’s command named him al-Hasan.

After the martyrdom of Imam Ali (Pbuh), the people of Kufa City swore allegiance to Imam Hassan (Pbuh) who had been governing as caliph for about six months.

Unfortunately; in the time of Imam Ali’s Imammate people turned out to be disobedient and separated. They devoted a lot of energy to the civil wars and some of the commanders and members of the army, joined Mo’avieh’s side due to the deceits threats and promises. Therefore Imam Hassan (Pbuh) found out if he wished to fight with Mo’avieh, he would be defeated and all of Shi’ites would be killed. Hence; he was obliged to make peace with Mo’avieh (which was the bitterest experience). Provided that he would continue to be in succession to throne and he would be the next caliph after Mo’avieh. And This would mean that Mo’avieh would treat Imam Hassan (Pbuh) as the way the last Caliphs treated Imam Ali (Pbuh). Mo’avieh accepted to be just a kaliph and not to interfere with the religious affairs and he also promised to consult with Imam as his advisor.

When Muawiya (la) gloated over what he had taken from Imam Ali (as) and his son, Imam Hassaan replied:

“O you who mention Ali, I am Al Hassan (as), and Ali (as)was my father. You are Muawiya (la) and your father was Sakhr (Abu Sufyan). My mother was Fatima (as) and your mother was Hind. My grand father was the apostle of Allah and your grandfather was Harb. My grandmother was Khadija and your grandmother ws Futayla. May Allah curse him who tries to reduce our reputation and to diminish our nobility, who does evil against our antiquiy and yet who has been ahead of us in disbelief and hypocrisy.

THE GOOD ATTRIBUTES OF IMAM HASSAN (Pbuh)

A Syrian man went to Medina. He saw an honorable man who was riding a horse .He explains the story in this way: “ I had never seen such a noble figure before. I was so anxious to know his name. I was told that he was Hassan Ibn Ali (Pbuh). Suddenly I became angry and asked him if he was Imam Ali’s son. His answer was positive. I began to insult him and his father as much as possible. He was in constant state of silence. Therefore; I was ashamed of myself. When I stopped insulting, he laughed and said: “ I think you are from Syria.” Obviously, he was right. “ If you need some place to settle down or some money or any thing else, come with me”. I was much more ashamed of myself. I was so wondered by his good nature that since then I could not like the others the way I liked him.”
