Suratul-Qadr (Chapter 97)

Suratul-Qadr (Chapter 97)

ITS MERITS

The Holy Prophet (saww) said, “One who recites it, his reward shall be equal to one who has fasted during Ramadhan and kept awake in the night of Qadr”. (Majma’ al-Bayaan)

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.) said, “One who recites INNA ANZALNAAHU loudly, his reward shall be equal to one who drew his sword (from its sheath) and performed Jihad in the cause of Allah (SWT); and one who recites it silently, his reward shall be equal to one who rolled in his own blood in the cause of Allah (SWT)”.

(Tafseer-e-Namoona)

“In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

Verily We sent it (Quran) down in the night of Qadr”.

Was the whole Quran revealed at once or were its verses sent gradually over a period of 23 years of the Nubuwwah of the Holy Prophet (saww)??

Two words used in the Holy Quran denote revelation of Quran: Inzaal and Tanzeel.

Inzaal refers to ‘Nuzoole Daf’ee’which means the whole Quran was revealed at one time either on the heart of the Holy Prophet (saww), or on Baytul-Mamoor, or Lawhe Mahfoodh.

Tanzeel refers to ‘Nuzoole Tadreeji’ meaning Quran was revealed gradually over a period of 23 years as stated above.

Therefore, the Holy Quran was revealed in both forms. (Tafseer-e-Namoona)

According to S V Mir Ahmad Ali, the whole Quran was revealed to the Holy Prophet (saww) in the night of Qadr and he (saww) recited and conveyed its passages and verses to the people as and when commanded by Allah (SWT) through Jibrael.

“And what shall make you know what the night of Qadr is? The night of Qadr is better than 1000 months”.

1000 months is usually more than 80 years. This is a normal life span of a human being today. Therefore the verse also implies that the night of Qadr is better than the whole life of a human being.

The Rahmah of Allah (SWT) upon the believers is amazing. He (SWT) is looking for slightest opportunity to reward the Momineen in many folds. Reflect on the following narration:

The Holy Prophet (saww) once said,

“There was once a person in Bani Israel who put on a dress of a soldier and wore it for 1000 months in readiness to fight in the cause of Allah (SWT)”.

The companions were amazed by the faith of this man and expressed their wish to earn similar merit for themselves; thereupon Suratul-Qadr was revealed.

(Durr al-Manthoor)

In another tradition, the Holy Prophet (saww) mentioned to his companions the names of four people in Bani Israel who worshipped Allah for 80 years without sinning. When the companions wished they could have a similar opportunity, this Surah was revealed in which Allah (SWT) says: ‘The night of Qadr is better than 1000 months’. (Durr al-Manthoor)

In other words, any good act performed in the night of Qadr, its reward shall be multiplied by 1000 months. Such is the love of Allah (SWT) for the believers.

“In it the angels and the ROOH descend by the leave of their Lord, with all affairs”.

The word Tanazzul is a continuous present tense, which shows that they descend on every night of Qadr. Who is ‘ROOH’?

Some say ‘ROOH’ is Jibrael who is also known as ‘Rooh al-Ameen’.

Some say it refers to revelation, thus the meaning of the verse is that the angels descend with revelation.

Some say that ‘ROOH’ is a creature of Allah (SWT) who is superior to Jibrael.

Somebody asked Imam Ja’ffar al-Sadiq (a.s.), “Does ROOH refer to the same Jibrael?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “Jibrael is from the angels; whereas ROOH is superior to the angels. (Don’t you see) Allah says: ‘In it the angels and the ROOH descend’(Tafseer-e-Namoona)

The angels and the ROOH come with all affairs (whatever has been decreed and all the blessings) to Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi (AJ).

A person once asked Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.), “Do you have the knowledge as to when exactly the night of Qadr falls?” Imam (a.s.) said, “How should we not know and the angels therein (night of Qadr) are doing our tawaaf”. (Tafseer-e-Burhaan)

“(It is all) peace, till the break of dawn”.

The night of Qadr is the night of peace. Throughout the night, the angels come with the message of peace for all the believers.
