what we expect from scholarily figures of sunnietes?
By Syed Mohammad Masoom
The Holy Quran The word of Allah or the divine Book sent down upon his last apostles, namely, mohammad is a miraculois scripture in proof (burhan) of his prophethood.
All the great scholars of the two major islamic sects, viz., the sunnites and the shiites are unanimously to hold that so far as the alteration is concerned the Quran is perfectly safe from such a satanic design and exibitions, ie is intact uptil now since it was collected at the hand of prophet under the divine guidence. So, there is nothing forged and fabricated or missing from the Holy Quran left by Holy Preacher of Islam.
There are some kind of Tahrif we see : Tahrif in Qiraat, Tahrif in reading, Marks inserted for the division of verses and also the uinsertion of Marks(vowelpionts0 called “i”rab” in Arabic.
The muslim scholars have held unanimously that the Holy quran left by the Prophet(s.a.w), collected by him and copied by Ali (a.s) and by other companions of the prophet(s.a.w) had no Vowel pionts, no marks of Divisions of surah (chapters) into verses, No division of Holy Quran into parts(ajazah) so far as the interpretation of the Quran is concern perversions and alteration have definately taken place.
I am giving one example of change of places of Quranic verses in Holy quran, just to clarify my words ” great Muslim scholars of Quranic science e..g. Suyuti Fakhral razi have written that according the statements of companions of Propeht(s.a.w) so many verse of Meccan chapters were put in the medinite ones and vice vera. after the death of Holy Prophet(s.a.w) wanton alterations took place in respect to the arrangement of the Quranic verses also.

While I was with Aisha, the mother of the Believers, a person from Iraq came and asked, “What type of shroud is the best?” ‘Aisha said, “May Allah be merciful to you! What does it matter?” He said, “O mother of the Believers! Show me (the copy of) your Quran,” She said, “Why?” He said, “In order to compile and arrange the Quran according to it, for people recite it with its Surahs not in proper order.” ‘Aisha said, “What does it matter which part of it you read first? (Be informed) that the first thing that was revealed thereof was a Sura from al-Mufassal, and in it was mentioned Paradise and the Fire. REf: Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith: 6.515
As a matter of fact, the Quran that we use which was compiled by the companions is not in the sequence that has been revealed. In fact, the Sunni scholars confirm that the first Chapter of Quran which was sent down to the Prophet (PBUH&HF) was Chapter al-Iqra’ (al-Alaq, Ch. 96).Sunni References: – al-Burhan, by al-Zarkashi, v1, p259,- al-Itqan, by al-Suyuti, v1, p202.- Fathul Bari, by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, v10, p417,- Irshad al-sari, by al-Qastalani, v7, p454
The completeness of Quran is so indisputable among Shia that the greatest scholar of Shia in Hadith, Abu Jafar Muhammad Ibn Ali Ibn al-Husain Ibn Babwayh, known as “Shaykh Saduq” (309/919-381/991), wrote:
“Our belief is that the Quran which Allah revealed to His Prophet Muhammad is (the same as) the one between the two covers (daffatayn). And it is the one which is in the hands of the people, and is not greater in extent than that. The number of surahs as generally accepted is one hundred and fourteen …And he who asserts that we say that it is greater in extent than that, is a liar.”
Shi’i reference: Shi’ite Creed (al-I’tiqadat al-Imamiyyah), by Shaykh Saduq, English version, p77.
Our belief is that the Quran which Allah revealed to His Prophet Muhammad is (the same as) the one between the two covers (daffatayn) ;neigther it was more than what it is at present nor short of what the Prophet of Islam left behind. The numbers of its chapeter according to others are 114 , but we hold that “Wal duha” and alam Nashrah” ie chapter 93 and 94 are one chapetr , similarily ‘Alam tara Kaifa’ and ; Lilaf-i-Quraishin” is also one chapter ie Total number is 112 . Those who charge us to believe that the Quran was more than what it is now, are liers”..Ref: Shaykh Saduq Risalatu Itiqadat bup: from iran pg 28
In tafseer Ala;ur Rahmain by Allama al jawad al balighi of al najaf said: The shia sects believes that Nothing is missing from Quran…
Ayatullah Khui Also Rejected the theory of Naksh” (ie Deletion abrogation of verses from the Quran). according to him each and every verse of the Quran whether it belongs to the category of ” Nasikh” (abrogative) of to that of Mansukh(abrogated) is still preserved and extant in the Quran, currently in the circulation. In Favour of His words Ayataullah Khui mentioned the following Quranic verses: “Ot is surely amighty book., falsehood shall not come to it from before or behind it; revelation of from the wise, the praised one. Ref: Holy quran Ha mim Ch 41:42
Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s), The fifth Imam of shietes as reported by ali bin ibrahim al Qummi said: The falsehood would neither enter from before on the Quran as happened is the case of torah and gospel, nor any other scripture will be sent down in future to invalidate the Quran.
Professor Shaikh Mohammad Al madani who was dean of the faculty of theology is Al Azhar University of cairo –An outstanding elite of the sunniets has judicially remarked in this context : so far as the shiets are concerned God forbid us to hold that because of certain weak reports exisiting in their books, they hold the belief that the Quran suffers from deficiencies in its text. The reports as such exist in the books of Ahl e sunnat also and both these sects flately rejects their authenticity and they set forth strong arguements to prove such repoprts false and weak. From among the shiah and zaidiah none holds that there is any shortage in the Quran has gone under vehement changes but it was confiscated by egyption government. so whether on the basis of those weak reports one should conclude that that the sunnites have disowned the purity of Quran.? or, because of the weak reports of suggesting addition and deletion of verses from Quran , transmitted, recorded or given place in books ,by such and such figures of the sunniets, they have adopted the belief that the quran is mutilated?
NO NEVER—The Reports of the same nature though exist in the books of the shias in the same as in our own books, but on behalf of the shia we must recognise the fact that they also do not believe in Tahrif.(of Quran) Ref: Risalatul Islam Vol 11 no.4 pag 282-283 pub from cairo egypt.
This we also expect from other sunni scholarly figures of the sunni as this will be a great service to the Quran and to the cause of Islam and Muslim unity.
