Ja’far al-Sadiq (Arabic: جعفر الصادق) (April 20, 702 – December 4, 765), in full Ja’far ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Husayn, is considered the sixth Shi’a imam by Ja’fari Shi’a Muslims. He was a theologian and jurist. His rulings are the basis of the Jafari school of Shi’a jurisprudence (fiqh); but he is well respected by Sunnis for his contributions to the Sunni scholarship as well. The dispute over who was to succeed him led to the split of the Ismailis from the mainstream Twelver Shi’a and the establishment of the Aga Khan’s family line.

Abbasid caliph martyred Imam Jafar-as-Sadiq( A.S.) through poisoning

25th Shawwal The Martyrdom Anniversary of Imam Jafar-as-Sadiq(A.S.)

Imam Jafar-as-Sadiq( A.S) the Sixth Holy Imam was the “Founder of the First Grand Islamic University”. In this university the Holy Imam(A.S.) taught various branches of sciences and  more than four thousand students were attracted towards him from far-off places.Imam Jafar-as-Sadiq( A.S.) strengthened the foundations  of Islamic Jurisprudence and he is also considered  as “The Founder of the Imamia School of Jurisprudence” .

Mansur Dawaniqi, the  Abbasid caliph martyred Imam Jafar-as-Sadiq( A.S.) through poisoning on 25th Shawwal 148 A.H. and his holy body was laid to rest in the Jannat-al-Baqi cemetery in the holy city of Madinah.

The Funneral prayer was conducted by his son the seventh Imam and his body was laid to rest in the cemetery of jannat-ul-baqi . beside the grave of Imam Zaynul Abidin.

On this Sad and Mournful occasion we express our Heartfelt Condolences and Deepest Grief to all the Muslims and the Lovers of the Holy Ahlul Bayt(A.S.) in the world.

Abu Basir says that Umme Khalid Abadiya presented herself before Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (a.s.) when Abu Basir was also present. Umme Khalid said; “May I be sacrificed for you, on the day of Qiyamat I will tell Allah that I have done as commanded by Jafar ibn Muhammad (a.s.). Physicians have told me to knead the flour with grape wine and eat the bread. This will cure the terrible pain of my heart. I ask you, shall I do this ?”

Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (a.s.) replied to Umme Khalid; “No ! By Allah I will not permit you even a drop of wine. Don’t taste even a drop of it. Otherwise when your soul reaches here (Imam pointed towards his throat) you will only regret.” Then Imam (a.s.) asked Umme Khalid thrice.

“Have you understood ?” “Yes”, replied Umme Khalid.

A student of Fuzail Ibne Ayaz was on the death-bed. Fuzail came to him, and sitting near his head began to recite Surah Yasin. The disciple told his teacher, “Do not recite the Quran!” Fuzail became silent. Then he began to urge his disciple to repeat “La ilaha illallah”. The student said: “I will not repeat this formula because I am disgusted with it !” And he died in the same condition.

Fuzail Ibne Ayaz was extremely perturbed. He returned home after completing his duties and went to sleep. He saw his student undergoing punishment. He asked him, “What is the reason of your being deprived of faith (Imaan) at the time of your death? You were one of my best students.”

The student replied: “There are three reasons, firstly, I used to backbite too much, secondly, I used to be jealous, thirdly, a physician had prescribed for my malady a cup of wine every year. He told me that if I do not drink, the disease will never be cured. Every year I drank one cup of wine.”

The Writings of Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a)

Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a) by Dr. Hamid Algar

Imam Ja’far Sadiq is the 6th Imam of shi’ites and his Kunyet (title) is “Abu-Abdollah”. He was born in Medina in 73 A.H and his death was in Shav’val 148 A.H. His grave is in Baqi’ Cemetery by the grave of his father “Imam Mohammed Baqir”.

His most famous title was “Sadiq” because he never spokes unless the truth. As Hazrat-e Mohammad stated (about him): “ He was the Right word and the messenger of truth”. Also he had several titles such as “Fazil”, “Tahir”, and “Sabir”.

Hazrat-e Imam Sadiq (Pbuh) was contemporary with some of the Abbasids and Umayyads caliphates e.g.

Hashem Ibn-e Abdulmalik (105 – 125 A.H)

Marvan Ibn-e Mohammad (126 – 132 A.H)

Abu Ja’far or Mansoor Davaniqi (137 – 158 A.H)

Imam (Pbuh) was martyred in 148 A.H, at the age of 65 and his Imamate period was 34 years. As it is said he was poisoned by the Medina’s governor, Ja’far Ibn-e Soleyman.

The scientific rank of Imam Sadiq

The shi’ite Fiqh (jurisprudence) is also called Ja’fari Fiqh that is attributed to Imam Ja’far-e Sadiq, because the major parts of the Islamic legal regulations were enacted by this great man.

Considering the social great necessity and readiness, Imam Sadiq took advantage of the suitable political atmosphere and continued his father’s cultural and scientific movement and established a great university in many fields of science. He taught more than 4000 students among them appeared the great scientific characters such as “Hesham Ibn-e Hekam” (who wrote more than 31 books), “Jabir Ibn-e Hayyan”,( the founder of scientific chemistry with more than 200 books in various scientific fields), “Mohammed Ibn-e Moslem”, and etc. The students of Imam Sadiq’s university, who came from every part of the country, were both Shi’ite and Sunnite. Among them “Abu- Hanifeh” was the most important Sunnite students. Both the Shi’ite and Sunnite scholars honored him very much.

Mansoor conspires against Imam (A.S.)

Since the cultural school of thought of Imam Sadiq (A.S.) considered human beings effective in their fate and told them it is you who form a society! It is you who make yourselves prosperous or unfortunate and miserable. Only you provide the grounds for your progress or your fall.

Meaning thereby, it is you who can dismiss the rulers from the seat of power and do not accept cruelty and hand over the ruler ship to the men who are capable and sympathizers.

The propagation and spread of this belief and idea, which was the same Quranic belief of the Muslims, displeased and annoyed Mansoor.

He tried that he might arrest and stop the flow of this belief by propagation of negative values about morality and corruption of ideas and practices. Thus refrain the people from joining the school of thought of Imam Jaffar-e-Sadiq (A.S.), which is the school of information, consciousness and movement.

Mansoor employed scholars for the implementation of his aims so that they may make the people believe in the religion of suppression and constraint. That is to say, they wanted to mould the belief of people and make them believe that whatever poverty, woe, and oppression and excesses are going on, all these are from God and human being do not have any interference to reshape it. So that as a result of it the opposition, revolt and uprising are stopped. People may tolerate the excesses and cruelties of the tyrant rulers and bear the punishments and whips of their criminal masters. They, instead of objecting upon them, may express Commendation and thankfulness.

Evidently and clearly Imam Sadiq (A.S.) could not watch the propagation of such a wrong and dangerous belief, which was given to the people and taught in the name of Islamic culture and beliefs.

Imam (A.S.) laid the foundation of the Islamic University to combat against this dangerous imperialistic belief. In a short span of time, he trained four thousand students in the field of Islamic culture and beliefs and spread them among the people to get the effects of the propaganda of the agent scholars, neutralized and defused.

Mansoor’s Excesses over Imam Sadiq (A.S.)

Surprisingly, the Abbasades gathered the people around them on the pretext of taking the revenge of the blood of martyrs of Karbala and fight against the brutalities of Bani Omaiydes and remove and replace the Bani Omaiydes through the help of Iranians who were inclined to and loved the family of Imam Ali (A.S.) and also with the help of Abu Muslim Khorasani. But instead of handing over the caliphate to the Imam of the age i.e., Imam Jaffar-e-Sadiq (A.S.) they themselves overtook the government.

From the year 132 Hijra the period of Omaiydes was discontinued. Two caliphs named ‘Saffah’ and ‘Mansoor’ overtook power. The first one ruled for 10 years while the second for a period of 22 years. All the time they teased and annoyed the Imams and religious leaders continuously. Imam Sadiq (A.S.) was under a severe stress and pressure during the age of Mansoor. Even to the extent that sometimes the people were stopped from seeing him. So far so, that when a person named ‘Haroon’ wanted to see Imam (A.S.) and enquire the solution to a problem. He started thinking what to do to meet the Imam (A.S.). Suddenly, he happened to see a street hawker who was selling cucumbers. He came near him, purchased all the cucumbers, borrowed his old dress, put it on, and pretending to be a cucumber seller went to Hazrat Imam’s house and questioned him about his problem, received the answer and returned.

Mansoor arrested most of the friends of Imam (A.S.) and imprisoned them and quite a few times decided to martyr the Imam (A.S.) but each time by the miracle of Imam (A.S.) he would be defeated.

Stability of Imam (A.S.)

Mansoor who had been disappointed after using various means and ways, started deceiving public and tried to manifest and show himself as the real heir of Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) and one of the persons fit for the post of Islamic caliphate, on the pretext that he is from the lineage of Abbass (Prophet’s uncle) and the family of Prophet (P.B.U.H.). But he knew fully well that he did not have the caliber and capability of this and that post only suited the sons of the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) “the Imams (A.S.).”

Imam Sadiq (A.S.) severely and strongly combated against this public deceiving conduct and degraded and disgraced this family through his letters.

1. One day Mansoor wrote to Imam (A.S.) “why do you not come to see me like the others?” Imam (A.S.) wrote in his response. “We do not possess any thing from the world so that we may be afraid of you for it (loss of it). You too do not possess anything for the justice day and the spiritualism so why must I come to see you?

2. The next day Mansoor wrote to Imam (A.S.) “Come here to admonish me.” Imam (A.S.) wrote replying him, “whosoever be from the people of the world (adorer of world) will not admonish you and whosoever will be the man of the justice day will not come near you.”

3. One of the days Imam (A.S.) was present in the assembly of ‘Mansoor’. By chance, a fly started teasing ‘Mansoor’ and howsoever he tried to make it buzz off it would not and again sat upon his far and head. Mansoor much annoyed as he was, “said to Imam (A.S.), “Why has God created the fly?”

Imam (A.S.) at once replied, “For the reason of disgracing and degrading the powerful tyrants through them.”

‘Mansoor’ became annoyed; he sat comfortably on his place and allowed the Imam (A.S.) to leave.

Conflict of Imam (A.S.) with ruler of Madina

After Mansoor had martyred a group of the family of Bani Hashim. He sent a man named “Sheba” as the ruler of Madina to keep the activities of Imam under observation. He came to the mosque on Friday and after the prayers were over. Seated himself on the tribune and started taking liberty and using foul language about Imam Ali (A.S.) and the family of the Prophet (P.B.U.H.). People who knew the Prophet’s family form a close quarters and loved them got extremely annoyed but they could not dare utter a word.

At this occasion Imam Sadiq (A.S.) got up and said, “Oh man! We deserve all those merits and virtues you have mentioned and you and Mansoor deserve those demerits and vices you have spoken about. Then he turned his face towards the people and said, “Do you know who will be the most of the looser on the day of justice, tomorrow. That person who sells his doomsday for the world (material gains) of the others and such is this corrupt ruler.”

Imam’s (A.S.) Martyrdom

Although Mansoor did his best to bring the Imam (A.S.) close to himself or make him silent by threatening him but he failed. So he decided to martyr Imam (A.S.).

Consequently, the Imam (A.S.) was poisoned and martyred on 25th of Shawwal, 148 Hijrah. His pure body was buried in the graveyard of Baqi in Madina.

We all know that the conduct of men is the reflection of their inner character and everyone can be recognized by his conduct.

There are only a very few people who do not spill out their conduct and whatever they have in their interior and do not exhibit it. Whatever they have in their hearts kindles the exterior of the electric lamp like an electric switch.

Whole of the life of Imam Sadiq (A.S.), like the other Imams (A.S.), was the enlightened lesson of the real and right Islam. He himself was considered to be the example and specimen of the Islamic ethic, moral and conduct. You cannot find a father and a son among all the people, of all the tribes who may resemble each other from all the angles of ideas, thoughts, character and conduct. But the family of the Prophet of Islam (P.B.U.H.) and his successors all were on the same line and performed their heavenly duty with one aim, one ideology, and did not have any kind of difference in speech, character and ethical conduct. About the ethical value and virtue of Imam Sadiq (A.S.) it is sufficient that out of four thousands of his students even a single one did not object or criticize upon the moral character and conduct of Imam (A.S.), and did not find a weak point in it.

He was a practical example and specimen for the Muslims with respect to eating, relaxing and resting, walking, speaking, and conducts with others.

He had the same social conduct with his friends as he had with his children.

TAQWA

Abu Hazim Abdul-Ghaffar narrates that:

In the days of Mansoor Dawaniqi, the Abbaside Caliph, I came to kufa with Ibrahim bin Ad-ham. Co-incidently, in those days Imam Ja’ffar ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq (as) also happened to be in Kufa.

When the Imam (as) was departing from kufa, many scholars and dignitories escorted him till outside the city of kufa. Prominent people like Sufyan Thauri and Ibrahim Ad-ham were also among them. However, something unusual and very interesting thing happened.

While escorting the Imam (as), few people happened to walk ahead whereas others were behind with the Imam (as) when suddenly, a fierce lion blocked the path of those who were infront. Not daring to move any further, they all froze waiting for the Imam (as) to come. Ibrahim Ad-ham said, “Let us not move from here till Ja’ffar ibn Muhammad (as) comes and then we shall see what he does with this beast”. When the Imam (as) arrived and he was informed about the situation, without any fear or hesitation, he (as) just walked towards the lion and holding its ears, pulled it to the side of the road. Then turning towards the dignitories who had escorted him, he (as) said, “If people had obeyed the commands of Allah (SWT) as He ought to be obeyed, they would have been able to use lions in carrying their loads”. (Ahsanul-Maqaal)

In this statement, Imam al-Sadiq (as) has made reference to what is known as Taqwa meaning “absolute obedience to the commands of Allah (SWT)”. Indeed, this is such an attribute which empowers man with extra-ordinary strength in life.

TO BE WITH THE TRUTHFUL

The Truthful are those who lead us to the path of Taqwa and they, according to our belief, are the Holy Prophet (saww) and the Infallible Imams (as) from his progeny.

Nafe’ bin Abdullah bin ‘Umar, in reference to the above quoted verse, states:

“In this verse, Allah (SWT) has first asked the Muslims to observe Taqwa and has then said, ‘…be always with truthful ones’ meaning ‘be always with Muhammad and his progeny’ “. (Tafseere Namoona)

AL-SADIQ, THE TITLE OF OUR IMAM (AS)

Our 6th Imam, Imam Ja’ffar ibn Muhammad (as) is popularly known and refered to as al-Sadiq meaning “The Truthful”.

Allama Majlisi (a.r) writes that: “Our 6th Imam (as) was given the title of al-Sadiq by the Holy Prophet (saww) himself and it is apparent that he was always recognized with this name among the people of the heavens from before”. (Jilaa al-’Uyoon)

Ibn Khalqan states that: “He (as) earned this title in a manner that it integrated with his own name because of the truth and reliability of what he spoke (during his days)”. (Wafiyyaat al-A’yaan)

Such was the profound Knowledge and Character of Imam al-Sadiq (as)!

DARING INCIDENTS

The following incidents shows that Imam al-Sadiq (as) did not fear the ruler of his time. Infact, whenever he (as) found an opportunity, he (as) lashed Mansoor Dawaniqi:

Once Imam al-Sadiq (as) was present in the court of Mansoor when a fly was being nuisance. It was every now and then sitting on the nose of Mansoor. Mansoor got so agitated that he turned towards Imam al-sadiq (as) and asked, “Why did Allah create flies?” The Imam (as) responded by saying: “So that oppressive and dictator rulers are humiliated and are made to feel weak despite everything…”(Nuqooshe ‘Ismat)

Mansoor once asked Imam al-Sadiq (as), “Why don’t you fear me like others do?” Imam (as) said, “O Mansoor! We (Ahlul-Bayt) have nothing in this world which we fear losing them (on account of not fearing you) nor do you have anything in the hereafter which we feel that we shall be denied of”. Mansoor said, “Then provide me with your company and render advice to me”. Imam (as) responded, “O Mansoor! One who is seeker of the world can never advice you (truly) and one who is seeker of the hereafter, can never provide company to the like of you”. (Nuqooshe ‘Ismat)

Merits of ‘Ulama (Islamic Scholars)

“O you who have faith! Be wary of Allah, and be with the truthful”.

(9:119)

Imam Fakhruddin ar-Raazi writes in his Tafseer: “Only the sinless i.e. .the Ma’sumeen – the infallibles can be truthful, as mentioned in this verse.

We, the Shia’hs of Ahlul-Bayt (as) believe that ‘the truthful’ mentioned in this verse, refers to the Holy Prophet (saww) and his holy progeny – the Ahlul-Bayt (as). We are commemorating the martyrdom of our one of our Imams who is popularly referred to as As-Sadiq meaning ‘the truthful’ and he is our 6th Holy Imam Ja’ffar ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq (as).

HADEETH ON ‘ULAMA

Imam as-Sadiq (as) has said, “The kings are rulers of the people and the ‘Ulama are the rulers of the kings”. (Meezan al-Hikmah)

There is no doubt that the true and the virtuous ‘Ulama have always enjoyed greater status then all the kings and rulers put together. History has shown that

the kings and the rulers of the world have always bowed down in respect before the ‘Ulama Or they have used ways and means to either isolate them from the society or eliminate them because they considered them as threats.

“Say (O Muhammad): Can those who know and those who do not know be equal? Verily only the men of understanding take the heed”. (39:9)

‘ULAMA- THE PREFERRED PEOPLE

It is related that:

[There was a great Shia’h Scholar in the days of our 10th Imam (as). Once a Nasibi (a person who curses the Ahlul-Bayt) had a debate with this scholar and the scholar defeated him through Quranic verses and Prophetic traditions. One day this scholar came into a gathering, which consisted mostly of Alavids and people of Banu Hashim; and Imam Al-Hadi (as) was also present. In the centre of that gathering, Imam (as) was seated and there was a huge pillow placed at that spot. As soon as the Imam (as) saw this scholar, he (as) rose from his place and asked the scholar to come forward until the Imam (as) made him sit next to him and offered him the pillow to relax. One old man from Banu Hashim did not like this, so he complained saying, “O Son of the Prophet! How can you give preference to an ordinary person over a Sayyid who belongs to the progeny of Abu Talib and Abbas?” When our Imam (as) heard this, he (as) was extremely furious with the old man and started quoting verses from the Holy Quran to prove the supremacy of a scholar over everyone else.

Imam (as) asked the people present there: “Do you believe the commands of Allah in the Quran?” They all said, “Yes!” Then the Imam (as) said, “Hasn’t Allah (SWT) said: “Allah will raise those who have faith and those who have been given knowledge in rank…” (58:11). Then know that just as Allah loves a Mumin over a non-Mumin, similarly, He loves a Mumin with knowledge over a Mumin without knowledge. (Now tell me) Hasn’t Allah (SWT) also said, “Say (O Muhammad): Can those who know and those who do not know be equal? Verily only the men of understanding take the heed”. (39:9) Then why are you people trying to stop me from giving preference to one who has been preferred by Allah (SWT)?? This Scholar has utilized his knowledge, which Allah (SWT) has blessed him and defeated our enemy with it. This act is better than any family ties and relation in my eyes”.] (Al-Ihtijaaj)

The Holy Prophet (saww) has said, “The superiority of a Scholar over others is like the superiority of a Prophet over his nation”. (Kanzul-‘Ummaal)

He (saww) has also said, “The –Religious- Scholars are the trustees of Allah upon His –entire- creation”. (Kanzul-‘Ummaal)

OUR DUTIES TOWARDS ‘ULAMA

Our duties towards our ‘Ulama are: We must accord them with maximum respect; Follow their guidance as required; Not to challenge them with our ignorance; Love them and never show hostility towards them

The Holy Prophet (saww) has said, “Beware! Never belie a Scholar, and do not come in confrontation against him, do not be hostile towards him and love him. For verily their love is the sign of sincerity and hostility to them is the sign of hypocrisy. Beware! Do not insult a Scholar. Whoever insults him insults me and whoever insults me insults Allah and whoever insults Allah then his path is to Hellfire. Whoever honours a Scholar, honours me. And whoever honours me, honours Allah. And whoever honours Allah then his path is towards Paradise”. (Gunahaane-e-Kabeera)

IMAM AS-SADIQ (AS) HONOURING THE ‘ULAMA

Imam Ja’ffar as-Sadiq (as) was the most knowledgeable person of his time. Despite this, the people who studied under him and became virtuous Scholars, Imam (as) accorded them with maxim respect and supported them in different ways.

Abu Hamza Thumali was a companion as well as a devotee of our Imam (as). Infact he had the honour of being with 4 Imams (as) during his lifetime. This companion was also regarded as a Scholar of a very high calibre. Imam Ja’ffar as-Sadiq (as) used to say: “I feel mental tranquillity on seeing him”. Imam ar-Ridha (as) said of him, “He was the Salman al-Farsi of his age”. (Status of Imam as-Sadiq)

Himraan bin Aayoon. Once a most learned Syrian scholar came to our Imam (as) and a controversy occurred in a matter. Imam (as) ordered Himraan to argue with the Syrian. He managed to do so with such skills that the Syrian was dumbfounded. It is also related that once our Imam (as) was in Hajj when Bukeer, the brother of Himraan came to our Imam (as) and conveyed his brother’s salaams to him. Imam (as) said, “Himraan belongs to the people of Paradise and his faith is unshakeable”. (Status of Imam as-Sadiq)

The False Shia………………

hujjatheader_photo.jpg

A man from Khorasan (a city in Iran) suggested to Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (the sixth leader for the Shia and the grand son of the prophet Mohammed) to make an armed campaign as the Imam had with him 100,000 followers. In order to test the man’s quality of faith, the Holy Imam said:

“Just get down into this burning oven.”

He, the man, became so hesitant to obey the command of the Holy Imam. Meanwhile, a person came and greeted the Imam and the Holy Imam said to him:

“Will you get down into this burning oven!?”

That man, without any hesitation and with pleasure, got in to the burning oven. The Holy Imam then said to that Khorasanian man,

“We have with us a few of those men who can get in to the burning oven on our command. Others are not real Shi’as. There is a lot of difference between one’s words and deeds.”(Biharul Anwar, Vol. 11, page 139)

It is to be noted that the man who got into the burning oven remained unaffected and was well and hearty just like the Prophet when he was thrown in to the burning fire.

Talk about faith! Can we really do something like that? If Imam Mehdi (the 12th leader for the Shia) came out right now and told us to jump into a burning flame could we do it? I’m sure we can say yes now but in reality we would be hesitant.

What is tricky to people these days is the outer faith—some people think that looking pious from the outside makes them a religious person. If so, then we’ve got a lot coming our way on the Day of Judgment, things that we wished were 100 miles away from us. These types of people are on the wrong path, the wrong belief, and absolutely the false Shia. Better yet these types of people have a name. Their names are Hypocrites: people who put on a false appearance of religion.

God says in the Holy Qur’an:

“And of the people (are some) who say, ‘we believe in God and the Last Day (of Judgment’, (while in fact) they are not believers (at all).” 2: 8

We are committed in our efforts to promote a platform for a healthy society which adheres to the tenets of peace, justice and freedom.

Corpse among the Living

Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says,
“The Almighty Allah sent some angels to destroy the people of a particular town. When the angels reached there, they found a worshiper engrossed in worship. The angels said, “O our Lord! Your particular slave is busy in worship, how can we send punishment on this town? The reply came, ‘Do not care about this man because he has never been angry for Our sake and never behaved curtly with the sinners.’
(Wasaelush Shia)

Amirul Momineen Ali (a.s.) says:

Some believers perform Nahy Anil
Munkar with heart, tongue and hands. These people possess good
qualities from every aspect. While some do Nahy Anil Munkar with heart
and tongue. They have two good qualities and lack the third one. Others
perform Nahy Anil Munkar only with their hearts and have only one good
quality. They are deprived of the two higher qualities. But the person
who has none of these three qualities is like a corpse amongst the
living. In comparison to Amr bil Maroof and Nahy Anil Munkar other good
deeds and Jihad in the way of Allah is like a drop of water in
comparison to the sea. By performing Amr bil Maroof and Nahy Anil
Munkar someone’s death does not come near and neither is there any
reduction in sustenance.
